Kathy Swan Officially Nominates Speaker

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – State Representative Kathy Swan, R-Cape Girardeau, officially began her service as a state legislator after being sworn in during a ceremony Wednesday, January 9 in the Missouri State Capitol. Swan joined 161 other state representatives who were administered the oath of office during opening day proceedings in the Missouri House of Representatives.

“It was a great honor and humbling experience to stand with all the other members both new and returning and take an oath to uphold the US and Missouri Constitutions, it was an experience I had been anticipating since winning my seat in November,” said Swan. “I am anxious for the coming session and I welcome the challenges that will surely face us as we work to ensure jobs and stability for Missourians.”

Members gathered in the House Chamber as Secretary of State Robin Carnahan gaveled in the beginning of the 97th General Assembly. Missouri Supreme Court Chief Justice Richard Teitelman then administered the oath of office to all 163 representatives. Concluding the election of a temporary speaker, Rep. Swan placed the name of Rep. Timothy W. Jones, R-Eureka, in nomination for Speaker of the House. “I was very privileged to nominate the Speaker and deliver the nomination speech in the election process.” Speaker Jones was sworn in by Judge Dan Pelikan of the 11th Circuit Court of Missouri.

“We have a tough session ahead of us that will demand our full attention as we try to address some of the most pressing issues facing our state, such as the ever encroaching over-reach from the Federal Government. I am excited to get to work representing the people of the 147th district and working to make our great state a better place to live, work and raise a family,” said Swan.

The 97th General Assembly is made up of 163 representatives and 34 senators. In the House, there are 56 first-term legislators.
